In the Cloud

Being in the Cloud brings numerous advantages – no maintenance, world-class security and massive scalability. The hosts for Cloud computing have a huge benefit – economies of scale. They buy computing and storage capacity in bulk. They can hire one person to oversee the maintenance of the “server farm” or the security issues.

 

 

Scalability – Consider the Cloud to be a “server farm” with virtually unlimited computing and storage space. Therefore, anytime the capacity monitors for a particular system show an increase is needed, the Cloud automatically delivers the required resources.

 

No Maintenance – Your company has zero maintenance issues for storage and computing capacity. The Cloud’s host has staff to manage all resources.  Automatic redundancy is invoked if the disk storage for an application hosted in the Cloud dies. The Cloud will automatically assign new storage and complete a Restore from the Backups it has taken, and users are likely even unaware that a problem has occurred.

 

Security

Again, economies of scale are applied to provide the best software, hardware and personnel required to design, install and monitor every security precaution known. The Cloud host can, and must, provide the best.

·        Deterrent controls reduce attacks on a cloud system. Like a warning sign on a fence or a property, deterrent controls typically reduce the threat level by informing potential attackers that there will be adverse consequences.

·        Preventive controls strengthen the system against incidents by reducing if not actually eliminating vulnerabilities – like assuring cloud users are positively identified.

·        Detective controls are intended to detect and react to any incidents that occur – like system and network security monitoring.

·        Corrective controls reduce the consequences of an incident, normally by limiting the damage –like restoring system backups to rebuild a compromised system.
